Use of waste heat in the rolling mill in Metallurgy in Hagen
Bilstein is an investor of this project in Hagen (Germany).
Electricity and heating is generated thanks to the project. Generated in the rolling mill waste heat is since 2014 further utilized in a specially developed version of Organic Rankine Cycle. Ethanol is used as organic fluid and it drives a piston engine instead of a standard turbine. Heat energy is thus transformed into mechanical energy, which drives the generator and energy is further transformed into electrical energy. The solution is convenient in a sense that it can be easily used in a case of discontinuous heat energy supply. The system increases energy effectiveness by 39%, is environmentally friendly and apart from generating electricity provides heating as well. It is suitable for small and medium businesses.
